BREAKING: German authorities say at least two people have been killed and approximately 100 others have been injured early Tuesday after two trains collided head-on.

Police spokesman Stefan Sotag told The Associated Press that two regional trains crashed on a single track between Rosenheim and Holzkirchen shortly before 7 a.m. (1 a.m. EST) on Tuesday.

The crash occurred near the spa town of Bad Aibling, approximately 35 miles southeast of Munich. The German news agency Dpa reported that one of the trains derailed in the crash, and several cars overtued.

It also said eight rescue helicopters were standing on a lawn near the entrance to Bad Aibling and further rescue staff were on the way to the scene of the crash.

Sotag told AP that the scene of the accident was so confusing that he did not have any more specific numbers of injured and dead yet.

"This is the biggest accident we have had in years in this region and we have many emergency doctors, ambulances and helicopters on the scene," said Sotag, who added that some people were still stuck inside the wreckage of the train and rescue persoel were trying to free them.
