Florida authorities said early Saturday that former “The Voice” performer Christina Grimmie died after being shot at a concert venue.
Orlando police said during a news conference that Grimmie, 22, was shot at about 10:45 p.m. at The Plaza Live where had performed earlier with the boy band Before You Exit.
Police said the suspect “walked up and shot” Grimmie after the performance, while merchandise was being sold and autographs were being given. The suspect killed himself after Grimmie’s brother tackled him.
Officials called her brother a hero.
Police said the unidentified suspect had two guns, but no motive has been established. Authorities said they had no further updates.
Josh Call, who was working at a vegan hot dog stand outside the venue, told the Orlando Sentinel he heard about five gun shots.
"It was quick like pow, pow, pow, pow," he said.
Call said a security guard rushed to make sure others were out of the area. He said he waited a few minutes and went inside where he saw a female on the ground with blood coming out of her head and saw another person injured.
He said a man was on the floor in a pool of blood and face “completely disfigured.”
“I don’t think anyone expected something like this to happen. It was horrifying,” he added.
Grimmie, a New Jersey native, finished third during season six of NBC's "The Voice."
