Two NYPD officers were shot Thursday night in the Bronx and suffered non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.
A spokeswoman for New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said one of the officers was shot in the face and the other was shot in an arm.
"Obviously we're deeply troubled and conceed by what happened and pray they will be OK," Hinton told the Associated Press.
The shooting happened in a public housing complex near 320 East 156th Street in the Melrose section, Fox 5 reported.
The officers had stopped to question a group of people before getting into an exchange of gunfire, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press.
The officers encountered a group of people in a hallway, and someone in the group pulled out a gun and exchanged fire with the officers, said the official, who wasn't authorized to speak publicly about the developing investigation and spoke to the AP on the condition of anonymity.
One suspect was found dead with an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound, police said.
Several suspects were in custody Thursday night and two guns were recovered from where the shooting took place, officials said.
The NYPD tweeted that the two officers are in "stable condition."
