Law enforcement sources tell Fox News that a Secret Service officer shot an armed individual after the person approached the White House complex with a weapon in plain sight – in an incident that put the White House temporarily on lockdown.
Fox News is told the individual was commanded to drop the weapon but did not comply. The Secret Service opened fire, shooting the suspect in the stomach.
That individual has been transported to a nearby hospital with critical injuries.
An FBI team had also responded to the reports of shots fired near the White House complex, a law enforcement source told Fox News. The incident prompted the Secret Service to clear the White House lawn and put complex on lockdown. That reportedly has been lifted.
U.S. Park Police tweeted that the shooting took place on West Executive Drive a little after 3 p.m. ET.
District of Columbia Fire and EMS spokesman Doug Buchanan says one person has been taken to a nearby hospital and is in critical condition.
Initial reports also said one person is in custody.
The White House grounds were shut down to pedestrian traffic, temporarily locking staff members and reporters indoors.
President Obama was not at the White House. He'd left two hours earlier for an afteoon round of golf.
"No one within or associated with the White House was injured, and everyone in the White House is safe and accounted for. The president has been made aware of the situation," the White House said in a statement.
Vice President Joe Biden was in the White House complex at the time and was secured during the lockdown, his office said.
