An alleged gunman was taken into custody, and a U.S. Capitol Police officer was wounded, after shots were fired Monday afteoon at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center complex – an incident that sent the Capitol complex and the White House into lockdown.
Fox News is told there was a single shooter, who was shot by law enforcement and is now in custody. An inteal security notice obtained by Fox News said the “shooter is down and on the way to the hospital.”
The same notice said “one individual was hit by shrapnel and is being taken to the hospital.”
Fox News is told a U.S. Capitol Police officer was shot, though was not believed to be seriously injured.
Fox News is told the FBI is responding, and there do not appear to be any threats to other parts of the city.
Diane Bilo, a visiting tourist from Cinciati, told reporters her husband was inside the building when the shooting happened. She read a text she received from her husband that said “it sounded like a full clip.”
The U.S. Capitol complex remains on lockdown after the reports of gunfire first surfaced Monday afteoon. No one will be allowed to enter or exit any building, and those outside are being told to seek cover.
An inteal message says U.S. Capitol Police were locking down the complex "due to a potential security threat."
The White House also was briefly put on lockdown because of the report.
The situation was apparently contained to the Visitors Center but no further information was immediately available.
