GARRY SHANDLING DIES Actor known for 'The Larry Sanders Show' dead at 66

Comedian Garry Shandling, known for “It’s Garry Shandling’s Show” and “The Larry Sanders Show,” died Thursday. He was 66.

Los Angeles Police officer Tony Im told the Associated Press that Shandling died Thursday in Los Angeles. Im said officers were dispatched to Shandling's home Thursday for a reported medical emergency. Shandling was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Im did not have any details on when the call was placed or what the nature of the emergency was. He said police will conduct a death investigation.

Coroner's spokesman Ed Winter said his office did not yet have any details about Shandling's death.

In addition to his work as a comedian, Shandling also received recognition for his work as a sitcom writer, actor, and producer.

The Chicago-bo Shandling moved from a short stint in the advertising business to comedy writing and standup.

Then in the 1980s he began to experiment with TV comedy with his first series, "It's Garry Shandling's Show," a Showtime sitcom that called attention to its artificial nature with the actors routinely breaking the fourth wall.

In 1992, he created his comic masterpiece with "The Larry Sanders Show," which starred him as an egomaniacal late-night TV host with an anxiety-ridden show-biz life behind the scenes. The show ran from 1992 to 1998 on HBO. He starred and co-created the comedy, where he played a late-night talk show host, along with Deis Klein.

Shandling was nominated for 18 Emmys for the show and, along with Peter Tolan, won an Emmy for the series finale.

Last weekend, Shandling was seen in a photo posted on Twitter by Kathy Griffin with Bob Odenkirk, who co-starred with Garry on "Larry Sanders."

On Thursday, she posted a photo with the message, "Sunday, my longtime friend Garry Shandling was here, making every1 laugh. I loved him. I'll miss our talks the most"

After news of his death broke on Thursday, reaction poured in from celebrities on Twitter.

Amy Schumer wrote on Twitter, "Goodbye Gary Shandling thank you for your kindness and your generosity and for making me laugh so damn much"
