(Fox 13 Memphis) Eight people were taken to hospitals after a ride suddenly shut down Saturday at a fair in Memphis, Te., officials said. Riders were enjoying the Moonraker, which spins around an axis and tilts up and down on an angle, at the Delta Fair when the ride's computer detected a problem and immediately began safety shutdown, Matt Snyder, the fair's safety director, told the Associated Press. As the ride stopped spiing and began to descend, the operator of the ride panicked and pressed a manual override button that released the safety restraints before it settled into its cradle. An Afghan security official said five gunmen wearing military uniforms captured an American and an Australian. The incident happened close to the university, according to Kabul police chief Abdel Rahman Rahimi. Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said in a statement that its embassy in Kabul was seeking to "verify reports of the kidnapping." A 17-year-old in Essex was sentenced to eight years in jail Friday for an acid attack on a group of friends at a train station, The Guardian reported. Alexander Bassey, who reportedly showed no remorse after the March 22 attack, admitted to three charges of causing grievous harm, according to the report.
