WORTH HOW MUCH? Homemade 'gun' fetches big bucks at buyback

  • A homemade gun allegedly exchanged in a gun buyback program. (Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus) A Minneapolis gun buyback program targeting weapons used in street crimes may be shooting blanks, as detractors said a Saturday collection mostly took in antiquated, unused or homemade arms from legal owners and did little to thin the firearm supply actually available to dangerous criminals. Two Minneapolis locations collected about 150 firearms Saturday, but both exchanges were forced to shut down several hours early when officials ran out of Visa gift cards – $25,000 worth, The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported. And at least some of that money helped finance the purchase of even more guns. One anonymous gun owner told WCCO he received $200 in gift cards that he planned to use to buy a new firearm. That man said he didn’t think the program was serving its intended purpose. “I just don’t feel that a criminal is going to come up to a fire department with a bunch of police around it and, mayweather worth how much, facebook worth how much, rihanna worth how much, eminem worth how much, drake worth how much, beyonce worth how much, apple worth how much, google worth how much, oprah worth how much, net worth how much ...ادامه مطلب

  • FILE - This June 27, 2011 file photo shows Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Aaron Persky, who drew criticism for sentencing former Stanford University swimmer Brock Tuer to only six months in jail for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman. (Jason Doiy/The Recorder via AP, File) A judge who came under fire after sentencing a Stanford swimmer to six months in a sexual assault case requested Thursday to remove himself from handling criminal cases, but efforts to recall him still remain. Santa Clara County Judge Aaron Persky requested that he be assigned to civil court and that request was approved, the county’s Presiding Judge Rise Pinchon said in a statement. "While I firmly believe in Judge Persky's ability to serve in his current assignment, he has requested to be assigned to the civil division, in which he previously served," Pichon said. • PASSING THE BUCK? Report: Clinton says she took Powell's email advice

  •   Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton reportedly told federal authorities during her questioning over her email practices while at the State Department that former Secretary of State Colin Powell encouraged her to use a private email account. The New York Times reported Wednesday that Clinton’s revelation is part of the FBI’s notes that were given to Congress on Tuesday about the agency’s questioning in July that led Director James Comey not to pursue criminal charges against her over her use of private emails. An email exchange emerged from 2009 between Clinton and Powell during the questioning that revealed that she had asked the former secretary of state about his email practices under George W. Bush, a source told The Times. Clinton had already setup her private email server during that time. • Hackers snatch, post NSA cyber tools

  • June 6, 2013: This photo shows the sign outside the National Security Agency campus in Fort Meade, Md. (AP) An almost day-long outage of the National Security Agency’s website has raised further questions as to whether America's most secretive surveillance agency has itself been compromised, days after a shadowy cybergroup claimed to have obtained some of the NSA's most powerful hacking tools. The NSA.gov website went down late Monday, according to Politico, and was not restored until late Tuesday. A request for comment to the NSA from FoxNews.com was not immediately retued. The outage, however, came after the posting of a cache of hacking tools purportedly by a group known as "The Shadow Brokers" to its Tumblr account over the weekend. The group claimed to have obtained the malware, supposedly used by the NSA, from The Equation Group, a hacking group with alleged ties to the age, ...ادامه مطلب

  • THE PRESSURE IS ON Clinton reveals tax returns, asks Trump to follow suit

  •   Hillary Clinton and her running mate Tim Kaine released their 2015 tax retus on Friday – a move meant to put pressure on Donald Trump to disclose his own retus. According to the campaign release, Bill and Hillary Clinton paid $3.6 million in taxes on an adjusted gross income of $10.6 million. The filings show that the Clintons paid a federal tax rate of 34.2 percent in 2015. The bulk of their income -- more than $6 million -- came from speaking fees for appearances made largely before Hillary Clinton launched her campaign in April 2015. Clinton claimed to be “broke” after leaving the White House. The Clintons' income puts them well within the ranks of the top 0.1 percent of Americans, though they pay a higher tax rate than many of their elite peers, according to an analysis by the nonpartisan Tax Foundation based on 2013 data. The tax release is part of an effort to undercut Trump's character by questioning the New York businessman's record. • TECH-SAVVY CRIMINALS Police warn credit card info being stolen via Bluetooth

  • Police in Dallas say criminals have been installing Bluetooth-equipped skimmers on gas pumps that allow them to steal drivers' credit card data remotely. (Fox 4 News) Police in Dallas are waing drivers about a new method criminals are using to steal credit card information at gas pumps. At least five Exxon stations in the North Dallas area recently have been targeted by tech-savvy criminals who installed Bluetooth-equipped skimming machines on gas pumps, authorities told Fox 4 News. “They're not visible from the outside of the gas pump and appear to be made by the same person or same group,” said Lieutenant Tony Crawford, commander of the Dallas Police Financial Investigations Unit. "The sophisticated technology is used with a Bluetooth connection, this is the scary part, to transmit the data,” he added. “What that means is the suspect does not have to go back into the pump to retrieve the information that he's looking for.” Police were alerted to the scheme after discovering the device attached to a pump with a malfunctioning screen. To avoid becoming a victim, police told Fox 4 News that it is advised to pay inside and use cash when possible. Click for more from Fox 4 News. Let's block ads! بخوانید, ...ادامه مطلب

  • VA PENALTY TOO STIFF? Suit disputes right to take licenses for unpaid tickets

  • Getting pulled over in Virginia can lead a driver down a hard road. (AP) Robert Taylor insists he’s a good guy, but says the state of Virginia has treated him like a bad one ever since he got buried under a pile of unpaid traffic tickets, fees and fines. The 28-year-old Richmond man spends weekends in jail, can't hold a job and does not know how he will ever pay off the nearly $5,000 he owes the state. “I’m not a criminal in any sense of the word,” Robert Taylor told FoxNews.com. Without the availability of a payment plan, Taylor had his license suspended, leaving him unable to work. And being unable to work left him unable to make a dent in what he owes the state, he said. Now, Taylor is part of a class action suit which alleges that drivers have been treated unfairly under the state’s License-for-Payment system. Virginia is one of nine states that automatically suspends a license if they have not received fines of fee payments within 30 days. The state does so without any inquiry into non-payment or consideration for a driver’s financial circumstance. “I’m not a criminal in any sense of the word and I’ve been sent to jail twice.” - Robert Taylor According to the Legal Aid Justice Center, which filed the suit against Virginia’s Department of Motor Vehicles, hundreds of thousands of low-income residents are trapped in a cycle of debt and poverty. Nearly one in six drivers in Virginia has a suspended license for failure to pay court costs and fines. “It’s a problem for low-income individuals because of the volume and the high amount associated with the fines,” Angela Ciolfi, LAJC lead attoey, told FoxNews.com. “It’s fundamentally unfair to punish people for not being able to pay in addition to being punished for their infractions. “It’s easy for someone who makes $100 an hour to pay a $100 fine than for someone who makes $7.25 an hour," she added. "Low-income people are continuously punished under this system, while the wealthier people can atone by simply sign, ...ادامه مطلب

  • DEEP SPACE HAZARD? Study: Radiation took a toll on Apollo astronauts

  • Astronaut Charles "Pete" Conrad Jr., Apollo 12 commander, stands beside the United States flag on the lunar surface during the first extravehicular activity in this November 16, 1969 NASA handout photo (REUTERS/NASA/Handout via Reuters) The rarified group of men who blasted off from Earth on the Apollo missions in the 1960s and 70s have suffered from much higher rates of death by cardiovascular disease than not only other astronauts, but a slice of the U.S. population as a whole, a new study finds. Researchers looked at the rate of death from cardiovascular disease among astronauts who never flew in space, went to space but stayed in low-Earth orbit, and the Apollo astronauts, who went further away from Earth than anyone else. Of the 24 Apollo astronauts who flew into deep space, eight have died and seven were included in the study. The eighth astronaut - Edgar Mitchell - died after the data analysis had been completed.  That’s much higher than the other groups the researchers considered. Astronauts who never flew, or who flew in low-Earth orbit, had much lower rates of death from heart disease than the Apollo astronauts. And, for those non-Apollo astronauts, the rates of death from cardiovascular disease were much lower than death from Americans in general between the ages of 55 and 64. The Earth’s magnetosphere helps to protect people on the ground and in orbit from cosmic radiation. "We know very little about the effects of deep space radiation on human health, particularly on the cardiovascular system," Michael Delp, the first author on the new study and a professor at Florida State University, said in a statement. (ivan-river.com) Getting inked may lead to long-term skin problems and an increased risk of cancer, according to a new report by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). According to The Sun, the ECHA’s report will likely lead in the ban of certain inks and chemicals in the European Union (EU). “The most severe conces are allergies caused by the substances in the inks and possible carcinogenic, mutagenic or reproductive toxic effects,” the ECHA said in the report. Govements in the EU do not regulate tattoo ink as they do drugs and food, and many shops operate without govement regulation, The Sun reported. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates chemicals in products including tattoo ink, cosmetics and color additives. But due to other public health priorities and a previous lack of safety evidence, the FDA has not traditionally regulated tattoo ink and pigments. A recent influx of cheap Chinese tattoo inks that aren’t subject to safety checks are to blame, Rick Stevens, president of the Tattoo and Piercing Industry Union in the United Kingdom, told The Sun.  Let's block ads! بخوانید, ...ادامه مطلب

  • CHILDREN AT RISK? Lawsuit says Snapchat content too much for kids

  • A portrait of the Snapchat logo in Ventura (Reuters.) A lawsuit filed at a U.S. District Court in Los Angeles Thursday alleges that Snapchat doesn’t do enough to wa its young users and parents about the sexual content on its app. According to the Los Angeles Times, the suit takes aim at several articles on the app, including “People share their secret rules for sex” and 10 things he thinks when he can’t make you orgasm.” The lawsuit alleges that the material is “adult-rated” and would probably be prohibited by parents if they knew it was on the app. Snapchat is one of the most popular smartphone apps in the world and is primarily used for users to trade photos with each other. However, some allegedly explicit articles from media sites like MTV and Cosmopolitan often appear in the “discover” section of the app. The company’s terms of service specifically urge users not to send sexually explicit messages, but there’s no waing that users might encounter suggestive material within the app itself nor does it detail ways where minors could avoid such material. The paper reported that Mark Geragos, the attoey for Lynette Young and a minor in the lawsuit, is seeking $50,000 per day because he argues the circumstance is a violation of federal law. “A lot of the sites have taken the affirmative approach of dealing with this,” but Snapchat isn’t one of them, Geragos argues. Snapchat spokesman Noah Edwardsen said in a statement that the company hasn’t officially been served the suit, but apologized to those who were offended by the content on the app. “Our Discover partners have editorial independence, which is something that we support." The LA Times noted that the courts have held companies like Snapchat protected from material that is distributed from third party sources. However, the lawsuit contends that Snapchat hand-picked the media that distributes content across its platform and thus shouldn’t get immunity from the lawsuit. Geragos said at least 25 people had conta, ...ادامه مطلب
