  • DONALD IN TROUBLE? Judge orders Trump University docs to be released

  •   A federal judge ordered Friday the release of Trump University inteal documents in a class-action lawsuit against the defunct real estate school owned by presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel in San Diego calls for the documents to be released Thursday. The order comes in a response to a request by The Washington Post. Trump University has been cited repeatedly in anti-Trump political ads during the primary campaign as evidence that Trump fails to live up to his promises. Trump’s lawyers have denied any wrongdoing in the case before Curiel as well as another class-action suit in San Diego and a $40 million lawsuit filed in 2013 by the state of New York alleging that more than 5,000 had been defrauded. The billionaire real estate mogul, for his part, has claimed that Curiel is a "hater of Donald Trump" and should be ashamed of how he has handled the case. Trump also has questioned whether Curiel, who is Hispanic, is biased against him because of his call for deporting immigrants in the U.S. illegally. “I think Judge Curiel should be ashamed of himself. I think it’s a disgrace that he is doing this,” Trump said Friday. The lawsuit overseen by Curiel states that Trump University's nationwide seminars and classes were like infomercials and pressured students to buy more but didn't deliver as promised in spite of students paying as much as $35,000 for seminars. Curiel already has set a Nov. 28 trial date. 2016 Election Headquarters The latest headlines on the 2016 elections from the biggest name in politics. See Latest Coverage → Trump, who appears on a list of defense witnesses for the trial, has repeatedly pointed to a 98 percent satisfaction rate on inteal surveys. But the lawsuit says students were asked to rate the product when they believed they still had more instruction to come and were reluctant to openly criticize their teachers on surveys that were not anonymous. The Post reported that Curiel's, ...ادامه مطلب

  • PERFECT POLICE TOOL University of North Texas builds drug-sniffing car

  •  (University of North Texas) Guido Verbeck's team at the University of North Texas started out last year to create a portable mass spectrometer to analyze air quality. Stay with us here.To make it easier to haul around, the setup was built into a Ford Fusion Energi PHEV sedan, and the car could then be driven around communities to conduct experiments and take measurements. But the truly handy use for the high-tech Fusion was revealed only after a while: the UNT team had built was a powerful drug-sniffing tool, perfect to be used in law enforcement. ---------- More from Autoblog: Tesla to ramp-up production Lamborghini-powered Batmobile Ford F-150 Raptor conquers desert ----------The vehicle was built as a joint effort with Inficon of East Syracuse (NY), which builds gas analyzers and particle detectors. • WRITING ON THE WALL 'Anti-racism' graffiti arrest sparks uproar at university

  • One of the messages found around the University of Wisconsin. (University of Wisconsin Police Department) The writing is on the wall when it comes to the University of Wisconsin’s stance on "anti-racist" graffiti, but some students and faculty reportedly sided with the alleged vandal instead of the law.   Campus police last week capped a six-month investigation into a wave of graffiti, arresting a senior as he sat in Afro-American Studies class at the Madison campus. The messages he allegedly spray-painted around campus, which included "F--- the Police," cost $4,000 to clean up, according to police. "Graffiti is criminal vandalism and we act on these crimes regardless of the content," said campus Police Chief Susan Riseling. The police chief did apologize for disruption caused by the arrest of Denzel McDonald, but said in a statement that efforts to apprehend him outside of class were unsuccessful and that officers did not realize class had begun. But McDonald's supporters on campus were upset that he was arrested at all, according to Inside Higher Ed. “The university is more interested in protecting the symbols of UW as a progressive institution, like their buildings and (mascot) Bucky, rather than the students who are actually fighting for social change, and apparently their lives,” Professor Johanna Almiron,  whose class was interrupted by the arrest, said in a letter of protest signed by 700 students and faculty. “The way UWPD officers entered my class was very aggressive, with bulletproof vests and guns visible. I cannot believe they humiliated and terrified my students.” The 11 messages McDonald allegedly spray painted around campus also included, “Racizm in the air. Don’t breathe,-God" and “White supremacy is a disease.” McDonald was subsequently arrested on 11 preliminary counts of vandalism and one count of disorderly conduct, for allegedly threatening to kill someone who saw him painting the graffiti. Prosecutors have not yet formally charged McDonald, ...ادامه مطلب

  • PROVOCATIVE SYMBOL Student group: University of N.M. seal offensive

  • The University of New Mexico seal is coming under fire from some students. (unm.edu) ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. –  The University of New Mexico's official seal depicting a Spanish conquistador and a frontiersman is drawing accusations of racism from Native American students. Native American students in the Kiva Club as well as members of advocacy group The Red Nation call the seal offensive, the Albuquerque Joual reported. The seal is stamped on all diplomas and is present at most school events. Oceti Sakowin tribe member and UNM doctoral student Nick Estes designed his own version of the seal in protest, with the conquistador and frontiersman standing atop a pile of bones. He spoke at an organizing meeting for students against the current seal, saying it represents racism at the school. "To have this on my diploma is an insult of the highest order," Estes said. University President Bob Frank said he'd be open to discussing the students' ideas. He eaed degrees from the institution in the 1970s. "It's a seal I have always known," Frank said. "I certainly understand that people may have different points of view. If they want to talk about it, I am open to the conversation." The university's diversity council and Jozi de Leon, its vice president for equity and inclusion, are taking steps to work with the conceed students. De Leon attended a meeting where students talked about their problems with the seal. "This is a university," de Leon said. "This is the place where we should be having this kind of dialogue. We should be open to listening to the conces of the students." The students have started a petition opposing the seal, but no official complaint has been filed with the university.
