An investigation by police before they arrived at the home revealed that there had been “domestic issues” between Megan and her husband, the station reported. Mark Short was 40 and his wife was 33. Their three children were Lianna, 8, Mark Jr., 5, and Willow, 2. Willow and Megan were featured in articles in the Reading Eagle in 2014 and The New York Times in 2015 about Willow's transplant and the family’s difficulties obtaining anti-rejection medication for her. Megan worried at the end each month that her daughter’s drug supply would run out before it could be refilled, The Times reported. “You just feel like every month, you’re hoping that they don’t mess it up,” she told the paper. The motel sits next door to the police station in the Hudson Valley town, about 50 miles north of New York City. Coniglio, 43, used brute force and intimidation to get the mentally diminished veteran to cooperate with him, police said. The elderly man has advanced dementia, according to police. Police Chief Jack Quinn said the veteran received a "tremendous amount of money" each month in Social Security benefits, pension checks and food stamps, though investigators would not divulge the exact total. The veteran was taken to a hospital for evaluation. His name hasn't been released by police. Coniglio was being held Thursday in the Orange County Jail on $15,000 bail. The charges against him include grand larceny and unlawful imprisonment. The Legal Aid Society attoey representing him wasn't available for comment. Coniglio, of nearby Highland Falls, was arrested during a police raid captured on video by WABC-TV in New York City. The footage shows police taking Coniglio into custody at gunpoint while the bearded veteran sat on a bed in his cluttered room at the U.S. Academy Motel. Authorities said they were recently tipped off to the situation by neighbors, one of whom provided video showing the older man being physically abused outside his room. It couldn't be leaed from police why the alleged abuse continued for so long at the L-shaped motel that's just a few steps away from a building housing a police station and an ambulance service. "I swear to God I love this city but I wonder if this city loves me," Montrell Jackson wrote. He said while in uniform he gets nasty looks and out of uniform some consider him a threat. "I've experienced so much in my short life and these last 3 days have tested me to the core," the posting read. The message was posted July 8, just three days after a black man was shot and killed by police in Baton Rouge. That shooting was the beginning of an extremely tense week in the country's fraught history of race relations. Another black man was shot and killed by police the next day in Minnesota, with his girlfriend livestreaming the aftermath on Facebook. Then a black gunman opened fire during a protest against the police shootings in Dallas, killing five police officers. Jackson does not specifically refer to those events but the posting appears to be a reaction to them. Erika Green told The Associated Press Sunday that she is friends with the family of Jackson, one of three Baton Rouge law enforcement officers who were killed Sunday moing. (Facebook) More than $150,000 dollars have been raised for a Georgia 19-year-old who was found sleeping in a tent outside the gates of his college last weekend.  Fred Barley, who is homeless, was discovered by two police officers responding to a trespassing call near a parking lot at Gordon State College in Baesville. He told the officers he had ridden his little brother's bicycle six hours to register for classes for his second semester of college.  In addition to the bike, Barley had two duffel bags containing all his wordly possessions and two gallons of water. All he had to eat, according to a report by WSB, was a box of cereal. "After meeting Fred, I could tell he was a good kid,” Gordon State College Police Officer Dicky Carreker told the Baesville Herald-Gazette. “He was a young kid who had been dealt a bad hand and was trying to make the best out of it. All he wanted was a job." Carreker and Baesville Police Officer Maria Gebelein told Barley he couldn't stay in the tent, but they knew someplace he could stay. The officers brought Barley to a nearby motel and paid for two nights accomodation.  "The stuff that’s happening with police officers, I am black and he didn’t care what color I was," Barley told WSB. "He just helped me, and that meant a lot." The story, however, doesn't end there. After Carreker posted the story on Facebook, members of the community rallied behind Barley. A GoFundMe page on Barley's behalf had raised $150,000 dollars as of Saturday afteoon.  The owner of a local pizzeria hired him as a dishwasher and promised to work around his class scheduled (Barley wants to major in biology). Stephen Dwyer withdrew from school in his junior year to receive a life-saving bone marrow transplant for leukemia. Dwyer, who is student body president, is 2 1/2 credits short of graduating at Dobson High School in Mesa and will finish in December. A Facebook page supporting Dwyer said the teen wanted to sit on the field in a cap and gown alongside his classmates and didn’t even ask to receive a diploma or walk across the stage. After numerous meetings with the district superintendent and school board members, Dwyer’s request was denied. "This is so black and white to them, they can't even see straight. They are so unwilling to budge and it just is heartbreaking," Jeannie Moore, a family friend of Dwyer’s, told KTVK-TV. Several people attended the ceremony with signs supporting Dwyer and wore orange shirts, the color representing leukemia awareness. "They say it's a matter of policy, but, I mean, they should be able to make decisions based on circumstances, and this is a perfect circumstance to allow him to be able to do that," Jacob Martinez, a student council member, told Phoenix station KTVK-TV. Mesa Public Schools spokeswoman Helen Hollands lauded Dwyer for being “courageous” but cited district policy. And Hunter here walked up and handed this note to me. It was folded up so I couldn’t immediately tell exactly what it was but when I opened it up I saw that it was a hand-written note and it also included a gift card in it,” Officer O’Hayre told the FOX Business Network’s Maria Bartiromo.
